At long last, and not without great effort I now have my PS3 online. I recently just made my first foray into playing online via Mercenaries 3. I'm a first person shooter pro and my skills are the stuff of legend. But only on good old splitscreen multiplayer.
To me the idea of playing people you don't know and cannot see seems silly. I love having a couple of buddies in the same room on the same machine with me killing each other. It creates more fun.
So, any of you familiar with online play? What do you think of it?

I am, but only on Xbox. Whenever I go down to Harlan, we go to a friend's house and play Halo. They have at least 3 Xboxs of their own, and a TV in almost every room. Since so many of us play, we're split up and be in different rooms while we play. It's quite fun...and that way, they can't look over at your part of the screen and see where you are!
I like it...it's quite fun, and a good way to spend time with friends.

I've never tried it tbh...My eldest son plays a lot though. The thing with me is, I am kinda rubbish at the kind of games you can play online.

I keep meaning to find out what I need to get online with my Xbox 360 but it does not seem straight forward. Plus do you still need to pay a yearly/monthly subscription? I don't think I'd use it enough to be paying a subscription. Does anyone know what I'd need to get online, I'd also like to get online with my PSP. Which is easier? Things never seem to be easy, how can they not just sell an Xbox 360 online kit

One thing took about 5 minutes to piss me off with online play. The voice chat full of punk kids. I don't have a headset so can't talk to them but I can hear them. Last night I was treated to kids talking in Arabic, listened to two boys talk about something stupid, countless idiots trashing talking "yeah niggul! come get some!"
I fucking hate kids. Except Neph of course.

I'm not sure, since I do not own one yet. I just play on it at a friend's house. On the PS3, I have no idea.

If it is like the PS3 Kenny you're going to need to have the internet, highspeed dsl cable type shit. Dial up I doubt will do it. You're also going to need a router most likely. This bit was tricky for me. You have two kinds of them it seems: wired or wireless. Wireless might require your Xbox to have a wireless bit in it. My PS3 would have needed that bit too. So I went with a wired router. Then it was all simple from there:
Incoming internet wire to the cable modem. That to the router. Two other wires from the router to the PS3 and the computer.
Now it is free to play the PS3 online. They just get you with "micro-transactions." Updates to the system or games cost nothing. But downloads like games or special stuff for games will cost you.
According to my stepbrother who has the 360 the online service isn't free so you'll need to pay a subscription to play it online.

Standard issue PS3 jas a wireless reciever built in. Its not a good one, but still , also has a connection for wired internet, which works a lot better, but you need to drag the cable to the playstation, and if you are like me, you'd need 20 yards of feckin cable to reach it. PS3 online is free of all charge, only when you go to buy stuff you need to pay, but well DUH, thats life. Xbox Live (online) requires monthly fees, but you can pay for 6 months in advance, and Im not entirely sure if Xbox360 has a wireless port in it by default, would have to ask a friend of mine.
